At the time, 'sub-bass systems' were used extensively in PA rigs and some studios of course, but consumer versions were universally derided by the hi-fi cognoscenti. As an audiophile, Richard Lord recognised the need for a new breed of sub-bass system, conceived, designed and build to audiophile standards, which would blend naturally with any system in any room, and reproduce the clean, low frequencies vital to the faithful reproduction of music. To do this properly, he needed to match the bass driver with a dedicated, built-in amplifier, optimised to deliver maximum performance. Shortly afterwards, the first REL active sub-bass system was launched to critical acclaim.
